Weight loss challenge: rules and ideas

Good rules are short, the same for everyone and make every week exciting. Here are the basic rules that work, and ideas that keep your challenge from fizzling out after three weeks.

The basic rules

  1. Pick a length. 8 weeks is a good frame, anything from 4 to 16 weeks works. Shorter gets rushed, longer drags.
  2. One fixed weigh-in day. Once a week, in the morning after getting up, on the same scale. That keeps numbers comparable.
  3. Score by percentage. What counts is the change from the starting weight, not pounds or kilos. That gives everyone the same chance.
  4. Starting weight on day one. Everyone weighs in on the first day, and that value counts.
  5. Agree on late entries. Decide how long a missed weigh-in can be added afterwards.
  6. No loss counts as 0%. Nobody drops below zero.
  7. Keep it honest. If you like, send a photo of the scale display. Among friends that is usually plenty.

How to work out the winner

Change in % = (starting weight − current weight) ÷ starting weight × 100

Example: starting weight 200 lb, 190 lb on weigh-in day. That is 10 lb or 5.0%. Whoever has the biggest percentage change at the end wins. The percentage calculator does it for the whole group at once.

Ideas that make every week exciting

Weekly winners

Besides the overall ranking, every week whoever made the biggest change since the last weigh-in wins the week. So someone in 7th place can celebrate too, and nobody gives up in week 3.

Duels

Everyone faces the person right ahead of them. A small target feels closer than first place: “0.4 points to catch Jonas” motivates more than “3 percent to the top”.

Badges and streaks

Small awards for consistency and comebacks: three weigh-ins in a row, your best week, climbing two places, holding first place for two weeks.

Theme weeks

A small side quest for everyone each week: stairs instead of the lift, 8,000 steps a day, a week without soft drinks, an evening walk every day. Whoever joins in gets applause from the group.

Team scoring

From about ten people, teams are worth it. The team score is the average percentage of its members. Great for departments, family branches or friend groups. More in office weight loss challenge.

Cheering instead of comments

A 🔥 or 💪 after a weigh-in is quicker than a comment and never mean. Lossboard has fixed reactions and a “This week” feed for that.

What to leave out

  • Showing other people's weights. Percentages are enough for the competition.
  • Tasks that embarrass anyone.
  • Agreements that cost money. Better ideas are in the agreement ideas.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate weight loss percentage?

Starting weight minus current weight, divided by starting weight, times 100. From 200 lb to 190 lb that is 5.0%. The percentage calculator does it for the whole group.

How long should a weight loss challenge last?

8 weeks is a good default. With weekly winners and duels it stays exciting over 12 or 16 weeks too.

How often should you weigh in?

For scoring, once a week on a fixed weigh-in day. If you like, weigh in daily just for yourself, which smooths out swings in your own trend.

How do you stop cheating?

Fixed weigh-in day, same scale, in the morning. Anyone who wants can send a photo of the scale display. Among friends, trust is usually enough.

What happens if someone gains weight?

That week counts as 0%. Nobody gets a negative score, and next week everything is open again.

Who wins a tie?

With the same percentage, both share the place. If you need one winner, count the weekly wins.
