Weight loss challenge with friends

Losing weight with friends is a competition where everyone wins: you push each other, celebrate every weigh-in day and end up with a story to tell. Here is how to get going in ten minutes.

Why with friends?

On your own, weigh-in day is just a number. In a group it is an event: who made progress this week, who overtook whom, who takes the weekly win? Friendly competition lasts longer than any resolution, and cheering each other on makes the difference in the tough weeks.

Four steps to your challenge

  1. Round up the group. Ask in your group chat who is in. From three people it gets really exciting, up to 30 is possible.
  2. Set the rules. Length, weigh-in day and scoring by percentage. The proven basics are in rules and ideas.
  3. Create the challenge. In Lossboard it takes a minute. Post the invite link in the chat, everyone joins in the app or in the browser.
  4. Weigh in every week. You get a reminder on weigh-in day. Leaderboard, weekly winners and duels update by themselves.

What makes a challenge with friends exciting

  • Leaderboard by percentage. Starting at 240 lb gives no advantage over starting at 140 lb.
  • Weekly winners. A new race every week, even for the back of the field.
  • Duels. You chase the person right ahead of you. Lossboard shows what it takes to overtake.
  • Badges. Streak, best week, comeback, held the lead.
  • Cheering. 🔥 💪 👏 🎉 😮 on every weigh-in and every place change.
  • A result to share. At the end you get an image for the group album, without names or numbers if you prefer.

What does first place win?

Ideally something fun for everyone that costs nothing: first place picks the next day out, chooses the film for movie night or gets a trophy that moves on next round. More in the agreement ideas.

Spreadsheet or app?

With a spreadsheet, one person collects everyone's weight every week and does the maths. It works, but it takes time, and that person sees every weight. How the two compare is in spreadsheet or app. Lossboard is free for up to 3 people, and for up to 10 people the organiser pays €4.99 once.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How many friends can join?

From two people. Lossboard is free for up to 3 people, €4.99 once for up to 10 people and €9.99 for up to 30. Only the organiser pays.

Does everyone need the app?

No. Anyone who does not want to install it joins with the link in the browser and sees the leaderboard, their duel and badges there.

Do my friends see my weight?

No. The group sees your change in percent. Weights are only visible if you set the challenge up that way.

How long should the challenge last?

8 weeks is a good default. Anything from 4 to 16 weeks works, and afterwards you can start a new round with the same group.

What if someone wants to join later?

Late joiners start from their own starting weight and are scored by percentage from then on.
